The Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT) is a national accredited certification exam for pharmacy technicians. It evaluates the knowledge and skills associated with the performance of tasks required for professional practice as a pharmacy technician and provides a means for recognizing pharmacy technicians who continue to demonstrate their qualifications by complying with ICPT requirement and adhering to high professional standards.

The exam costs $105 and is available over 310 days a year at over 550 psi/LaserGrade Testing Centers located throughout North America and overseas. The ExCPT consists of 110 multiple-choice questions (100 scored). It lasts for two hours and includes an exit survey at the end.

The ExCPT questions fall under the following three general areas:
  • Regulations & Technician Duties – approx. 25%
    • General technician duties; federal & state law; federal, state and agency rules & regulations
  • Drugs & Drug Products – approx. 23%
    • Drug classification, dosage forms, brand & generic drug names
  • Dispensing Process – approx. 52%
    • Prescription information including preparing & dispensing prescriptions, pharmacy calculations, sterile products, repackagin
