The Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) certification is specific to emergency nursing and measures the attainment of a defined body of nursing knowledge pertinent to that specialty. Currently, more than 32,000 nurses hold the CEN certification. Although there are CENs throughout the world, the CEN exam is based on emergency nursing practice in the United States. You must pass the exam to attain initial CEN certification. To qualify for the exam, you must hold a current unrestricted Registered Nurse license in the United States or its Territories. A nursing certificate that is equivalent to a Registered Nurse in the United States is also acceptable.

The upgraded CEN exam consists of 175 items (150 scored and 25 unscored pretest items). Candidates need to correctly answer slightly above 70% of the scored items correctly to achieve a passing score. The CEN exam is available at Pearson VUE facilities.

You can schedule your exam appointment with BCEN’s test delivery provider, Pearson VUE, after receipt of the exam eligibility e-mail. An exam eligibility e-mail is sent immediately after your application is processed along with payment in full. It contains important information on your 90-day testing window and how to schedule your exam appointment with Pearson VUE. We strongly recommend that you decide on the date you want to sit for the exam and promptly schedule that date with Pearson VUE. Unlimited testing is allowed if you are unsuccessful; however, you are required to wait 90 days before re-testing. You may submit a re-test exam application online via your BCEN Account after the 90-day waiting period is over.
