International Board Certified Lactation Consultants function and contribute as members of the maternal-child health team. They provide care in a variety of settings, while making appropriate referrals to other health professionals and community support resources. Working together with mothers, families, policymakers and society, IBCLC certificate holders provide expert breastfeeding and lactation care, promote changes that support breastfeeding and help reduce the risks of not breastfeeding.

The purpose of the IBLCE certification program is to assess the knowledge and cognitive skills required for effective performance of, and by, an entry-level International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.

IBLCE requires that all first-time exam candidates must complete education and clinical experience in each of the following areas.
1. Health Sciences Education 2. Lactation Specific Clinical Experience 3. Lactation Specific Education There are a total of 175 multiple choice questions on the exam. The first part consists of approximately 75 text-only items, and the second part about 100 image-based items. Sometimes there are a few more in one part and a few less in the other part, but the total is always 175.
