The Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) credential is the highly sought after gold standard for perioperative registered nurses who are interested in enhancing and validating their specialized knowledge and skills. The CNOR exam is based on what a nurse with two years of practical experience in the OR is expected to know. It will assess a combination of experiential and cognitive knowledge which together form the foundation of competent clinical practice.

The CNOR exam consists of 200 multiple-choice questions (185 scored and 15 pretest questions). You will have 3 hours and 45 minutes to complete the exam. Once your application for the exam has been approved, you will have 3 months to schedule and complete it at one of the Prometric testing locations.

The exam will cover the following subject areas:

  • Preoperative Patient Assessment & Diagnosis – 22 Questions, 12% of the Exam
  • Develop Individualized Plan of Care & Identify Expected Outcomes – 19 Questions, 10% of the Exam
  • Intraoperative Activities – 50 Questions, 27% of the Exam
  • Communication – 18 Questions, 10% of the Exam
  • Transfer of Care – 11 Questions, 6% of the Exam
  • Cleaning, Disinfecting, Packaging, Sterilization, Transporting & Storing Instrumentation & Supplies – 17 Questions, 9% of the Exam
  • Emergency Situations – 20 Questions, 11% of the Exam
  • Management of Personnel, Services & Materials – 11 Questions, 6% of the Exam
  • Professional Accountability – 17 Questions, 9% of the Exam
