The Automotive Service Excellence or ASE had a mission to improve the quality of vehicle repair and service in the United States through the testing and certification of automotive repair technicians. The ASE A3 Practice Test covers manual drive train, which is a series of components that transfer power from the engine to the wheels. Manual drive trains are controlled directly by the driver through the use of a clutch and gearshift.

The ASE A3 Manual Drive Train and Axles Test is 1 hour long and has 50 (40 scored) multiple choice questions in the following categories:

  • Clutch Diagnosis & Repair – 6 questions
  • Transmission Diagnosis & Repair – 7 questions
  • Transaxle Diagnosis & Repair – 7 questions
  • Drive Shaft/Half-Shaft & Universal Joint/Constant Velocity (CV) Joint Diagnosis & Repair (Front & Rear Wheel Drive) – 5 questions
  • Four-Wheel Drive/All-Wheel Drive Component Diagnosis & Repair – 8 questions
